Der verkrüppelte Ex-Soldat Jake (Sam Worthington, u.a.

He has an overall story arc for 2 and 3, but has some modifications for that after spending some time during the last few months with native tribes in the Amazon basin. Script will be a ways out yet for AVATAR 2.
12:04 - He is focusing his writing right now on the AVATAR novel (corresponds to the first film) and that will take him the next couple of months to bang out. Not sure when it will be coming out, perhaps the end of the year or the first quarter of 2011.
12:45 - The AVATAR re-release will have 9 extra minutes, not 8 and it will all be CG. No extra footage of live action characters drinking coffee. Rainforest; some at night; a hunt sequence - a lot of flying; high impact action; an emotional scene toward the end has been added back; "the best CG in the film has been added as far as facial performance"; A Na'vi counterattack after the bulldozer attack; more of Grace at the school; adding the Stingbat and Sturmbeast creatures; additional Quaritch final AMP Suit battle shots; more of the glade love scene. It is all on par with the best of the rest of the film. They had lots of footage to choose from and they put back the absolute best scenes and shots they could.
15:45 - Cameron does not have the release timing of the 3D Blu-ray as they want to have a nice distribution of 3DTVs in homes. He has seen the 3D master run on consumer 3DTVs from Panasonic and Samsung and "It looks amazing. It looks really spectacular." [...]

MTV sprach mit James Cameron über den Stand der Dinge in Sachen "Avatar"-Sequels... [...] "'Avatar 2'... we're still working on deals. We don't start the movie until we get the deals worked out," he said. "I'm making notes. I'm not sitting idle," Cameron said. "But really, what I'm working on primarily is the novel."
He continued, "I never had a chance to get the novel done while we were making the movie, and I always intended to. I didn't want to do a cheesy novelization, where some hack comes in and kind of makes s--t up. I wanted to do something that was a legitimate novel that was inside the characters' heads and didn't have the wrong culture stuff, the wrong language stuff, all that."
Once the novel is out there, Cameron hopes that others will help him in further fleshing out the universe. There are simply key bits of the ongoing story, such as the happenings on Earth and Jake & Grace's personal arcs, that he wants to make sure are developed in specific ways. "I don't mind opening the universe, but I just don't want that to happen until I've got more meat on the bones. ... That all needs to be filled in before other writers can come in and run with it."
Presumably, once the novel is nailed down, work will begin in earnest on getting the sequel going. In fact, Cameron hints that the final two films in the planned trilogy could be lumped together into a single mega-production. "We're actually talking about that. That's not a decision yet," he said. "That is something that makes a lot of sense, given the nature of these productions, because we can bank all the [motion] capture and then go back and do cameras over a period of time."
There's also Cameron's insane schedule beyond the "Avatar" films. He's got any number of possible projects lined up, stories he's spoken before about wanting to tell, and locking into not one but two multi-year "Avatar" productions will undoubtedly set any other plans back. Fold both movies into one slightly longer production process, however, and it's a more economical use of that time.
The nature of the "Avatar" world is also a big plus. Where live-action films shot back-to-back have breakneck schedules and place great demands on the participating cast & crews, the largely CG environments of the planet Pandora require a comparably smaller commitment. "The way these back-to-back productions fall apart is that you're trying to do two live-action films back to back, and you're working on it for a year and a half, shooting. Everyone is dead. It's not humanly possible. This type of film, it absolutely would work."

[...] Speaking of Cameron, Worthington told ComingSoon.net that he is excited for the theatrical re-release, but that he isn't sure what's going to be included in the eight minutes of additional footage:
"I wish we added eight hours. I think the first cut I saw was about six hours long... There's a couple of extra hunting scenes. There's a much-speculated and blogged sex scene everyone keeps f--king harping on about. To be honest, I think everyone's going to be disappointed that's it's not blue porn... But there's a lot of other character parts. Giovanni [Ribisi] stuff and Stephen Lang stuff. So it's up to Jim. I know Jim would only release it if it enhanced the story by putting it back in."
Additionally, there's a number of scenes that took place on Earth that were ultimately excised from the final cut:
"We shot all that. When we first saw all that, it didn't [work]. You just want to get to the planet. It's kind of a slow burn. Jim always wanted it to be a slow burn start so that you would adjust to your eyes and adjust the world, but it because too much of slow burn. It was like, "hurry the f--k up, man."
Meanwhile, Avatar's future may not yet be on the schedule, but Worthington thinks it won't be long before thing start moving forward:
"Avatar 2 will be whenever Jim decides to write it. I think he's in Thailand at the moment or trying to save the Gulf. But I'm sure he's going to put pen to paper soon." [...]

CS! meldet... Talking about 3D at a technology forum in Seoul, South Korea, James Cameron said that he estimates it will take about three years to make the Avatar sequel. That's 18 months less than it took the first.
He said that the release date for the follow-up will be announced in a few months.
Cameron previously revealed that the sequel would focus on Pandora's ocean. "I'm going to be focusing on the ocean on Pandora, which will be equally rich and diverse and crazy and imaginative, but it just won't be a rain forest. I'm not saying we won't see what we've already seen; we'll see more of that as well," he said.
The first film has earned a massive $2.718 billion worldwide and has sold more than 19.7 million DVD and Blu-ray discs in three weeks.
[12.05.2010]
Reuters.com meldet... Avatar" has sold 19.7 million DVD and Blu-ray discs in three weeks, more than any other film has ever sold in that span, the studio 20th Century Fox said on Tuesday.

"Avatar" was released on DVD and Blu-ray on April 22.
The movie from director James Cameron already holds the record for the biggest film release at global box offices with more than $2.7 billion in ticket sales.

MarketSaw meldete kürzlich... [...] AVATAR 2 will continue several years after the events of the original. It will also lay the groundwork for the other moons in the system. Things are going to get quite "weird" to the point of becoming somewhat abstract! Each movie will stand on its own and there will definitely be NO shooting the sequels back to back. Trilogy? Actually no. The sky is no limit for this universe - the plot lines are endless.
AVATAR 2 SPOILER ALERT: This is verbatim from my source...
"Oh and Pandora has a lot of shit coming its way. Break out the space marines, looks like some bugs need a stomping."

[...] We created a broad canvas for the environment of film. That’s not just on Pandora, but throughout the Alpha Centauri AB system. And we expand out across that system and incorporate more into the story – not necessarily in the second film, but more toward a third film. I’ve already announced this, so I might as well say it: Part of my focus in the second film is in creating a different environment – a different setting within Pandora. And I’m going to be focusing on the ocean on Pandora, which will be equally rich and diverse and crazy and imaginative, but it just won’t be a rain forest. I’m not saying we won’t see what we’ve already seen; we’ll see more of that as well. [...]

[16.04.2010]
CS! sprach mit dem Produzenten Jon Landau, u.a. über das Sequel... [...] "Look, I think one of the things that we have been successful at is that the most pressure we feel is our own pressure," he told us. "I think that's true as we make a movie, whether it be 'Titanic' or 'Avatar.' Our pressure about an 'Avatar' sequel is self-imposed. We've always said that if the public wanted a sequel that we would do a sequel. That having been said, in my opinion, Jim has done two sequels in his career, and both times, he has at least equaled if not surpassed the original movie. We're only going to do it when we have a piece of material, a script, that we believe will be at least as entertaining and unique as the first movie was."
Then again, once they get that material--and Landau agreed that the possibilities for a sequel are somewhat endless--making a sequel will likely be a lot easier than it was to make the first movie. "Not only that, but the hard part is out of the way. We figured out how to do it, and our goal in the next one is to do it more cost-effectively and more time-efficiently, and we have kept on a team of our technical staff who is working right now on Gen 2 of what we did, but with all the experience that we've had. We kept them on, and they're working for us right now."
Over the next few months, Landau and Cameron will be overseeing production on the supplementary materials for the four-disc ultimate edition Avatar Blu-ray out in November, many of which will appear in the months between releases through "The Avatar Program," which will allow those who buy the initial DVD release exclusive access to the materials at Avatarmovie.com.
Eventually, the Blu-ray will include a brand-new two-hour documentary on making Avatar and unused extra scenes from the movie, including more on the Na'vi school run by Sigourney Weaver and on Jake's training as an Avatar. With that in mind, we wondered how much time Cameron might have to start developing new material.
"The good news is that we have systems and methodologies in place that will not consume a lot of Jim's time," Landau said. "I think Jim's time will be surgical coming in. We have a very good behind-the-scenes crew working on this two-hour documentary we want to put together - Jim's not doing it himself. We have Weta Digital working on these shots, but our animation supervisor is now our visual FX supervisor, so he'll take all of this to a certain point and then Jim will be able to come in, but hopefully, he'll be able to go off and do some other stuff. There are a small number of movies that Jim wants to (direct) himself, but he doesn't want to say that he can do things that he's not going to have time for, and we know that whatever movie he does is not going to be done in six months." [...]
